Son Buñola is a large private estate on the stunning North West coast of Mallorca, just south of Valldemossa. The estate is approximately 4000 acres, set in mountains, valleys, pine forests, farmland and 5 kms of coastline. There are two very individual, luxury villas available for holiday rental. Each has its own private grounds surrounded by farmland and forest, allowing complete privacy. A third is nearing the end of a 2 year renovation programme. Son Buñola provides a tranquil rural retreat where guests can relax and have every service provided.
Central to the estate is a large historic manor house dating from the 1800's, unused now but forming an incredible centre piece to the dramatic scenery. Terracing surrounds the manor house with vines, citrus fruit trees, almonds and olive trees. In the past, Son Buñola was a very important Finca on the island and used to produce its own olive oil and wine but farms in this area became less economic as machinery replaced manual labour.
The previous owner, Richard Branson, restored much of the land to its former glory and planted many fruit trees and vines, which are still tended. He also developed the two quiet luxury villas, which are tucked away in different areas of the estate. Relaxation and enjoyment of the nature and tranquillity is the main activity at Son Buñola. Guests are free to enjoy walking on the numerous paths on the estate, among the terraced olive trees or down to the small rock and pebble beach. Whilst wandering around, you may be lucky enough to spot eagles, kestrels, herons and lovely striped woodpeckers.
The estate is situated (--> location.html) on the north west coast of Mallorca between the traditional town of Esporles and the picturesque terraced village of Banyalbufar. A private road wanders 3 km down through the valley to the villas which are completely secluded, peaceful and quiet. However, Palma or Valldemossa are only 30 minutes away. This area is well known for its unspoilt coastline and dramatic mountains, providing numerous opportunities for walking and hiking.
"Son Buñola" can be written in Majorcan "Son Bunyola", and in the Internet you will also find it like "Son Bunola". "Mallorca" is written in English sometimes "Majorca".
Many people's memories of Mallorca are package holidays on crowded sandy beaches. It is true that there are still large beach resorts but, there is another side to the island, which is vast mountainous areas with peaks as big as Ben Nevis and miles of unspoilt coastlines. The Balearic government has been very proactive in protecting the environment, forming many National Parks on land and sea. Planning restrictions are now rigorously applied away from the large resorts and much emphasis is given to eco-tourism.
The image of Mallorca has changed over the years and it has developed into a very sophisticated destination. Many celebrities have made a home here; the most famous being Michael Douglas, who has been a great ambassador for the island. Palma is the capital of luxury yachting in the Mediterranean and is an interesting city in its own right, with stunning architecture and excellent shopping. For these reasons many businesses have developed to cater for these markets and there are many world class hotels, as well as an incredible selection of international quality restaurants.
There are still many places to eat local food or buy handicrafts but there are also many world class hotels and international quality restaurants and shopping, especially in Palma de Mallorca and Puerto Portals.
Guests can enjoy the many walking opportunities on the estate, along the scenic coastline and in the surrounding Traumuntana Mountains. Mallorca is a popular boating destination with a wide range of watersports to enjoy. There are many opportunities to charter a motor or sailing boat for the day with qualified crew to take charge of the boat. A day spent on the water around the stunning coastline with lunch in a small cove is an unforgettable experience. Children are well catered for with many activities centred around the beach resorts.
There is a good selection of golf courses all round the island. Mallorca is an island of rich cultural heritage. Local traditions are still very important and festivals take place throughout the year. Mallorca has a thriving artists' community in Deia and the new contemporary art museum in Palma has received critical acclaim.
There are currently 2 villas and a third rental villa is coming to the end of a 2 year renovation programme. Each is in a very distinct area of the estate and is completely separate and undisturbed. Although secluded, the villas provide every luxury and are furnished and equipped to the highest standards. We are sure that even the most discerning client will feel at home. They are available for limited rental during the year. The two villas are very similar in style but offer different levels of service as standard. We can tailor staffing to suit any requirements.
